new transit owner without manual needs advice

Postby colette » Wed Mar 08, 2006 12:37 pm

Ive just bought a transit80 swb 2.5d 1999treg. A couple of things I need to sort out but am having problems because I havent got a manual.

Firstly there is something odd going on with the locks. I have figured out that its one key to lock and the other to unlock (is this correct) but, I can only lock the rear and side door. The keys wont unlock so I have to do it from inside. Is this normal?

Secondly when I bought the van the spare wheel was in the back. Ive looked underneath and there seems to be some sort of device for the spare wheel but its not like anything Ive seen before and I cant figure out how to fix the wheel to it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

your spare wheel holder should have a chain hanging down and the jack handle is used to lower and raise it- chances are something whill have siezed up :?

id say you have a problem with the locks - with those year of locks any ford key will lock them you just need the correct key to unlock - but ive had em where the wrong side lock is fitted and any key unlocks them and only the correct key will lock

when new the van will have one key for all locks but when a lock breaks people tend to fit 1 new barrel and have a different key rather than a full new lockset :D

Sounds like your locks are worn, it should be one key and you should be able to lock and unlock them all from the outside. One thing I have found is that any key will lock the dorrs!

There should be a small square hole above the rear bumper when you open the rear doors and in this hole you use the jack handle to winde the spare wheel up and down.

Welcome Colette :D

You should be able to get an owners manual from your local Ford dealer if you really need one. There is also a Haynes manual you can buy for your van (book 3019, covers 86-99) about £16 on the web. :D
Even if you don't need it, grab it.
The minute you do need it, it'll be gone.

Thanks for the response. Spare wheel now in its rightful place under the van and I have ordered a set of new locks.

I didn't get a manual with mine either but there are available on Ebay for a few pounds so I got one there. Any Ford key will lock any Ford door (with the same lock type :P ) so your locks are probably just worn. They seem to wear out suprisingly quick, a friend of mine with a '95 escort went through three locks on the drivers door in a few years! To prevent this I fitted a remote kit that I bought off Ebay. Of course you need to have central locking for this to work.
The spare wheel is lowered on a steel rope from below the van. The holder has a safety catch that engages when the wheel is right up under the van and this can get jammed. Always best to check you can get the wheel out at your leisure and not at the side of the M6 at 3 in thee morning in the rain.
Good Luck,
Steve

Had exactly the same problem with my 95 LWB keys, would lock but not unlock, try having a new key cut first, cheapest and easist option first, my key was very worn, cost me 3 quid, can now lock and unlock all doors with one key.
If you live near a maccess store and know some one with an account, they do haynes manuals for £10.49 + vat.

Speaking of New keys, does anyone know where to get spare blank Ford keys.
They are a real rip off in Dublin from ford, they insist on 90 euro for a key. Sounds a bit rich as it has no electronics or immobiliser fitted.

Maybe it would be best to get a complete lock set, but they don't seem to come with the Ignition barrel.
I hear there are keysmiths that can cut a keyt from the Van registration details only.

A complete lock set does come with an ignition barrel, the PATS key set is cheaper than non-PATS. £63 with and £68 without. Both from Fords.
