when the engine is cold a small amount of diesel is injected into the inlet manifold through the flame plug, the flame plug ignites the diesel and sends flames into the manifold, pre-heating the air going into the engine.

I take it the flame plug is the one on the air intake pipe just underneath the EGR [mine is a turbo],but how does the fuel get in

If it is a flame plug it will have a pipe coming from a small fuel resevoire attached inline to the main fuel feed.
It is fairly unusual to find a transit with a flame plug system as it is only required for very low temperature starting.
most direct injection transit engines will start without glow plugs or flame plug.

We've got this on the big un. She starts on the button, but I think the 2 batteries help too.

YEAHHHHHH..
take the engine cover off..turn key.. push starter button..spray easy start up intake then it click click goes engine ..vroomm..engine running..otherwise it just used to just turn over and not start.only ever needed it first start of the day.and it even did about 35mpg which for a 6.5 tonne wasnt bad.
