ok I'm still looking to buy a 96-98 smiley lwb but i'm getting confused on the engines. I've seen 98 vans with the airfilter on top and 96 with the bannana engine. Can anybody put me straight on what year had what engine and which one to buy and which one is best avoided? i'm talking 2.5 diesel here

 short wheelbase low roof, or semi high roof or high roof, then you have long wheelbase low roof ,semi highroof and highroof, then you have long cube, then highcube!

engines are petrol 2ltr dohc 115ps
diesels start from 70ps then 76ps 80ps 85ps turbo and then 100ps turbo and if you are very lucky 115 ps turbo intercooled

not shure about the 80ps it may have been discond but this was available up to 94 i think!
all engines are good check for oil leeks and smoke take a test drive and see if it pulls ok and thats about it!
if its turbo hold the revs at around 2k and listen for hunting from the engine ,it should be smooth running if not 1 you can live with it or 2 it will cost you around £800
the turbo is the better as it will be more pulling power and quiter than a normal di! inside the cab anyway! :)

petrols are not that good when high milers rattley old things! diesel will be more trouble free if you get a good one! if you are looking for a short wheelbase then a ex bt or rac van is your best bet!

So how can you tell which engine is which? I looked at the pictures but it doesn't tell you which engine is putting out what power. Also are the engines specific to different models IE Will a short low roof how a low power engine compared to a high lwb? I'd like a long semi hi myself. It's going to be used for a couple of track bikes in the back plus gear and sometimes it will also have kg caravan on the back. I don't really understand the weight thing 80,100,150,190 what does it all mean? I guess I don't need a van which will carry very heavy loads but i guess the weight it can carry dictates which engine it's got again. This all very confusing to me  Maybe i should buy a LDV :P

The problem is, with a 10 year old van, the engine may have been changed. There are plenty of newer vans with older engines, in many ways the older Dis were the stronger engine. Originally they had the air cleaner on top. The later banana engine has the air cleaner at the side of the engine, in a square plastic housing. Also, output depends on what the original owner ordered from Ford. What makes you think LDV would be less complicated?!!

write we are getting somewere, so lwb you can have a 100 model or 150 or 190 or 230, depending wether you are putting alloys on or not ,if not then just get what ever long wheelbase takes your fancy,
if you want alloys then you will only need a 100 model the reason for this is the stud patern on your wheels ! :D
so engines doesnt realy matter as most lwb were 76 ps anyway ! whats your budget ,?
for a lwb expect to pay £1000 to £3500 ,depending on miles and conditon, also expect arch rust on this type of van! its standard!

Budget is about 1500 may stretch a little further for the right van. I'm aware of the standard and included in the price rust  Not bothered about putting alloys on it. Still fancy a turbo diesel

you might want to look for a long cube as many of them had turbo engines and electric windows and mirrors :D there are a few about. most r reg's go for about £1500 - £1800 :D
You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.
