White smoke at start up

1. I have a '92 swb 2.5 Diesel, when i start it up any time, it coughs out a large amount of white smoke. After two or three minutes then it runs normal. It is a bit noise aswell compared to other diesels, it sounds like a heavy knocking. Drives fine and cruises happily at 70 mph... Please can someone tell me how to stop it from smoking?

2. It has the bosch FIP fitted, no pre-heat, with the air filter to the side of the engine. There is are two ball joint connections that i assume should have something attached to them. One on the FIP the other on the truncking to the air filter.

Sounds like someone has disconnected the EGR, that's nothing to worry about.

I doubt very much it will be timing!

When you say noisey compared to other diesels are you comparing it to other Transits because they are noisey compared to most other diesel motors.

White smoke is most likely either water or air ingress in the fuel line/filter, if your filter has a screw cap on the bottom (it should have) just put a container under it and open the screw for a few seconds, when you remove the container you should be able to see any water that was in there.

If its air leakeage its harder to trace, but make sure all unions are tight (not too tight or the seals will split).

cheers, I am going to give the van a full service as it looks like it has not been done for a few years. As i have just bought the full kit on EBay.

I will then check all the unions as well.

Hi I have got the same problem with white smoke at start up then clears after a while and it has been diagnosed as having low compression on 2 cylinders which when the engine is cold do not produce enough compresssion to ignite the diesel, as you say it runs rough until it warms up . it was mentioned that it might be because the con rods are bent which could be the knocking you are talking about.

Gave it a full service this evening, the fuel pipes to the filter where loose. All are tigh now, started it up she smoked for a while then it faded away. I Will wait till tomorrow and see what its like early morning and after a good run.

it is unlikely that 2 conrods will be bent, 1 maybe as this is normally caused by water entering the cylinder and hydraulicing, it wouldnt cause knocking but it does make the big end shell wear unevenly
