Roller rear doors

Postby Boner » Fri May 13, 2005 11:33 pm

Hi folks
Ave been thinking latly o making my mk3 more accseible whilst im at work but secure at the same time.
Those big red LDV postie vans have roller rear doors and i know the retail version comes with normal doors so somebody must make em :D .
I think they be ideal loads of room with the roller door up and no doors to worry about catching in the wind etc.
You reakon its possible or know if anyone already makes a roller door kit for my van.
Be cool if i could :D .
Cheers

Lots of people make shutters (known in the bodybuilding trade as curtains), look on the web under bodybuilders or even rollershutter. What you are taling about is called a dryfrieght door, not a rollershutter.

A rollershutter is made of thin alluminum slats that roll up onto the roller. A dryfrieght (as seen on postie vans) is made of wide slats that go up on a track inside the roof, and is cable operated.

To be honest, to get a door from new would be a bit pricey a rollershutter for a luton body is about £400, and dryfieghts are more! Though you are talking about a smaller door overall, so it maybe will come to £200-300. Have you thought of looking in scrappies, there were loads of LDVs in service with the PO, so lots of em made thier way to scrappies over time.

Hope this helps

Well i done the scrappir run but not for the reason i wanted... Some little f*** broke into the van and ha manged to totaly bend the back doors frames and break the glass. Door frmaes now straightened best as poss!
The windows had limo black film and security film. nutted wire mesh behind this and pop riveted wood liner ontop of the back doors... he got through all that with noone in the street hearing.. ffs  .
Luckily nothing was taken as the van empty AND STAYING THAT WAY NOW..
Got a new pain of glass for the doors for 20 bucks almost new condition and pre blacked out..they fitted back in ok.
Im gona stake out my van if anyone goes near it at night their getting something thrown at their head i dont care self defence of the van lol.
Good to know the locks held up concidering her age.
Yet again wee f*** lol
Roller doors no no now too flimsy. Tailgait yes! and seen one today in semi high top version without window.
Always happens when ur fixing em up eh..
Take care folks watch ur vans security.

ps= the police were great they have given me a good report etc on what they can for now they also took the old window away as it was in 1 peice for prints etc... probably amount to nothing but they say its the reporting that gets the patrols into the areas needed... Were a quiet area and thats the problem.

Boner, sorry to hear about the break in, if you catch em it would be such a pity if they fell over whilst running away. On to your boot. Two or three times.
As for rollershutters being a bit flimsy, there is no glass in em and they are tracked all the way down. The nearest we have had to a break in, we noticed a small indentation (bolt cutters) in the Ingersol padlock shackle. The padlock cost £120, though and the hasp is £50. If you ever go for the dryfrieght door, don't rely on putting a padlock on the handle with the door, fit a seperate quality hasp. It would take hitting a shutter with a truck to force it off it's track. I would know, it happened to one of ours.
