normally aspirated engine to turbo

Postby jonni » Thu May 11, 2006 8:52 am

I want to know if it's possible to replace my normally aspirated diesel engine with a Turbo diesel engine.

The van is a 1999 (V reg) SWB 80 with a five speed box. Is this a big job? How many other parts would need to be swapped? :?

Cheers

It's my opinion that it is quite possible to fit a turbo engine.
But you will be advised to fit the Bosch mechanical pump instead of the Lucas which has alot of electronics, makes the conversion complicated and in some cases unreliable :(

I wonder what the others think :?:

Its possible and has been done by a few folks on here I believe, the EPIC pump does seem to be rather troublesome so a Bosh Mechanical is probably the best bet, it really depends on how much work you are prepared to do.

how much work

'it really depends on how much work you are prepared to do'.

As little as possible - lift out drop in was the plan, looks like it's not that simple though??

Main reason for wanting to swap is the complete lack of power for motorway driving. It will do 80 on the flat or downhill but show it a hill and it's down to third or even 2nd gear and lucky if it will stay at 40. Have been overtaken by artics and tankers which is frankly embarassing. Read a few of the mods on here to get more power and might try them this weekend. Only just got the van so haven't had much time to check it out yet. Getting it serviced next week so that may improve things, will have to wait and see.

A good check around (inc all the filters and oil) the if your still not happy  see if you have a bosch pump that could be tweaked a bit

Last option will be a turbo engine, remove the Lucas pump for the "correct" type of Bosch pump that can give you the extra fuelling required without putting in a complicated wiring loom, sensors, ECU etc. etc......

I would almost certainly say the exhaust system will also need to be changed :( :D

Good luck :D

only front flexi pipe from there on back its the same 8)
You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

My turbo systems bore is definately bigger than my normally aspirated one I had :? And the boxes seem to be a different shape, not that I have anything against the shape, more, an observation :D
