exhaust emission test, what to do if tranny fails it?

Postby photonova » Wed May 17, 2006 5:14 pm

hi all. i have a 94, lwb 2.5d which is due an mot. It is a bit of a smoker in the mornings and i am concerned it will fail the exhaust emission test on the mot. What happens if it does fail? do i have to get a new engine? i cant afford that and dont want to have to scrap the van. Someone told me to thrash the engine before the test but they also said it may not work. any suggestions would be very welcome.
cheers

an easy thing to do is try it without the air filter in if they are blocked you will get smoke!! :D and i'd certanly make sure its a operating temp before taking it to the test!!! :D

As Luke says..

Take out the air filter first, if its filthy it may just need a new one anyway.

Then if it does fail..

Change the fuel filter and get a can of 'forte`' fuel system cleaner.

If it still fails you may need to get the pump tweaked.

I normally take my Merc and give it a good hiding to blow the poo out of the exhaust before it goes in.I've heard a lot of people praise the forte cleaner,if you cut the revs down at max revs (ie) so the pedal doesn't go fully down that will help as well.

wind the throttle stop in a few turns, just enough to stop it belching smoke but not so much thatit is noticable lower revving

I wouldn't dare do that Fred.all the filler would fall out,and I'd probably get done for littering.
