Can you actually see that the pulley is broken up by looking at it or does it have to be removed. Can you actually see it hitting the timing cover with engine running. The pulley on mine has 3off 15mm head bolts in it.
Can I just remove the pulley if so how do I stop the pulley from turning to take it off. Cheers

stick it in gear then the engine won't turn - if it's been chattering you'll probably see the marks on the pulley or the timing cover when you've got it off

No, you can't see the defect without taking off the pulley.

Undo the 3 bolts and take off the pulley.

On the inside of the pulley there was a rubber bonding ring and a metal ring, these formed form the damper. Unfortunately someone used copydex glue instead of uhu and the metal ring came off.

The bolts can be used 3 times and from memory the torque was 30Nm + 90degrees

And everybody else for the advice will look at pulley first thing in the morning I'm keeping eveything crossed that it is the pulley and not something more serious. Its a horrible noise. Cheers

Good luck with it.

The usual noise sounds like someone hitting the front of the engine with a hammer every rotation until the centrifugal force acting on the pulley holds the damping weight in place once more.

I reckon it must be the pulley then nighthawk cos when you rev the engine it seems to dissapear (although not easy to tell because of noise of diesel engine) then the noise returns on idle.

The only thing I can see is if you hold the outer ring with the grooves in it you can turn the inner ring a bit with your hands could this be the problem of one coming away from the other. Cheers

sounds like it's had it then - it should be solidly bonded together

Yep Motorwise
There are 2 lugs on the front of the pulley that sit in grooves and you can see witness marks as they are hitting the end of the groove at the mo the lugs are sitting about 5mm off the end of the grooves where as I think they should be tight up against the groove. Cheers Motorwise

Hi all
Well the pulley is on and the noise has gone Nighthawk and Motorwise I owe you one thanks for all your help for solving this one much appreciated. The funny thing was the fella in the dealers said that he had never sold one of these pulleys or heard of the problem with them, I did laugh, mind you new pulley is a completely different design. Once again cheers boys.
