oil woes

Postby danny09 » Sun Dec 27, 2009 11:31 pm

i checked the oil level earlier - after buying the van was told it had just had an oil change - however level on the dipstick seemed low and the oil was thick and black - should i let the oil settle before checking levels as i had just been driving ( it was also smoking out the dipstick hole when i removed it -

also - i may be going blind here - but where is the oil filler cap?

its a 1995 swb 2.5 diesel btw

Yes, you need to let the oil settle, filler cap is on the front of the rocker cover with the breather attached.

its best to check when engine cold and settled, so first thing in the mornings a good idea.
also if its the one with yellow handle on dipstick, thats where you fill with engine oil.

Oil does go black quicker on an oil burner.... though I'm also amazed at what people are prepared to have 'just been done' when selling a motor!

For peace of mind you may as well change oil and filter and enjoy the smug satisfaction of looking after your motor :D
