2001 fwd 2.0 cuts out and heater cold

Postby david » Wed Dec 30, 2009 5:15 pm

Hi,
I need some advice on my transit please,Yesterday it lost heat from the heater and only blew cold air ,i checked the water level and it was ok,also and more seriously the temp gauge shot into the red and the engine cut out. After i turned the ignition off and then on again the temp was normal and it re started, ran 100m and same again ,temp shot up and cut out.The engine was not overheating just the gauge reading hot for a short while. I dont know if i have two seperate problems or are they both connected?? Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated .
Thank you David.

Like Mr MPuk says, your water pump is dead, the van cuts out to prevent it from damage caused by overheating

but make sure you check the splines on pas pump that drive water pump, as they wear, fitting new pump may get it going again but not for long.

Pump failure. Poor design
Suddenly the engine started to overheat, while accelerating onto a motorway. off the scale, engine shut itself off.
I suppose there are worse places that one could suddenly have an engine cut out, but this was rather scary.
I discovered I could make progress at tickover, any faster and it went off the scale.
I found that parked at the roadside with the engine on tickover the temperature gradually comes down.
I drove on to a safe layby for a closer inspection
Power steering OK. No water loss, tank is full. Heater blows cold. Water pump belt goes round and looks OK.
Is it the water pump impellor that has come off the shaft? I have known that happen on other cars.
Back home and strip down the parts, not an easy job
Investigation finds the Water Pump has stripped its splines, and the Power Steering Pump has a worn drive.
Replace both, all in now fine except my wallet!!
