starter motor

Postby blue stripes » Fri Dec 18, 2009 4:17 pm

had to call the rac out this morning and it was nice of them to turn up in a transit
van was showing signs of a flat battery
rac tested battery and said it had a full charge so he tested engine earth and all the leads from the battery found no faults but after trying to start it again it started so he did more tests with the van running
started and stoped it over and over again and it was fine
but found on startup the starter was pulling 200 amps he told me this is to high but the battery in the van should be up to it as its quite new and a high power battery but then after switching the van off he tested the battery and got an error code came up saying there was load being pulled from the battery when every thing was switched off so he did more tests and found there was no load being pulled from the battery it had him stumped and told me to get both battery and started tested
anyone had a similar problem and what do you suggest
thanks in advance simon(blue stripes) :(
is that dirt on my van ? no its ok just another bit of rust

Sounds like your starter is dyin, 200 amps is probably about right for a starter.

I would reckon you should get the battery tested and if its okay think about changing the starter

My money would still be on a bad connection, I bet the RAC man didn't disconnect and clean them all. A bad connection would also mean the starter pulls more current.
