yes keep it on charge overnight and yes make sure the caps are removed as this stops the battery from explosion.
try it tomorrow and see what happens

update.

The battery was on charge over night and got the voltage right up. BUT i took it to a garage and he said the cold crank amps are 375 not 680 as they shpould be.
Brought a new battery, fitted this and made no difference. Still just clicks. but the leads were getting warm.
Its had a
new battery
new main leads +ve -ve.
new starter but from a V reg. mines E
Now i just found out that the water has frozen in a top pipe. The van has been stood for a while.

Shell i put a starter on from a 1989 van as this was 3 times as big. is it possable that its not turning due to the engine freezing.

There is no earth terminal on the starter. The casing of the starter is the earth. You can fit an earth from one of the mounting bolts straight to the battery (-) terminal but you shouldn't need to.

There should be a main earth from the battery to the top alternator mounting bolt. Standard is 16mm cable (IMO, not man enough for the job). I would either add another 16mm cable or replace the existing one with 40mm. Make sure there is plenty of slack as the engine rocks a bit when running.

thanks.
I will change the neg lead over. and add another asap.

Would the frozen bit stop it turning?

this 1 is baffling me 2, could the wires on the starter be wrong?
not familiar with that starter but if I am right it should have 2 wires to it, massive red + lead that goes straight to battery and a small wire that comes from ignition and the earth should be bolted to engine as gbbiker said earlier
you could rock the van back & forth in gear to get the engine moving if you think its frozen as with any vehicle this weather doesnt help.
dont know about you but we've had about 8 inches of snow since 6am this morning and it only stopped for half an hour and it just keeps coming lol.

To clear things up, you should have connections on the starter as follows:

On the larger 8mm stud, you should have connected the 16mm (40mm on my van since I changed it) RED cable direct to the battery.

On the smaller 6mm stud, you should have connected the 1.5mm RED/BLACK cable that disappears into the ribbed sleeve and through the bulkhead up to the ignition.

There should be no other cables fitted to the solenoid (apart from the link cable that is factory fitted and resin sealed. Also possibly a small earth strap depending on the manufacturer).

Other than that, the earth cable as I said previously.

Remove and check the integrity of ALL of these connections. Smear a bit of Copperslip or Lithium grease on them be fore re-assembling.

There are 2 earth wires on mine. main one goes to a terminal on the starter and the other smaller on goes into the harness.

Should the main neg battery strap go to the starter? Not the mounting bolts but the terminal on the starter!!

Should there be one that connects to engine somewhere??

Anyone live near Warwick, Warwickshire. Midlands!!!!

just been reading this and getting confused......the 2 wires ,,,,,the one that goes to the starter and one that go into the loom are not earths ( black ) they should be live (red)

plus if the van can turn over and start with a jump from a car then the starter is not the problem ( as in number of teeth ...jamming).

so to recap ....wires from battery ( red positive +) 2 ,one in to the harness ,one to starter
from battery ( black earth - ) to body and possibly onto engine

on the starter there should be 2 wires .....big thick red one....to bolt on terminal and skinny onto solenoid ..which goes into loom

Worrying to think that someone had connected your cables the wrong way round before, as they must have been if you put them back the same place you took them off
