Duratorq 2.4 DMF starter problems

Postby rbiow » Sun Jan 03, 2010 2:45 pm

Hi

Any advice please. My starter motor on my Y reg transit had problems in November. Starter just spinning and not engaging. Removed starter and saw no signs of excess dust which some people had said to watch out for. Stripped starter down and freed of the seized dog clutch (a variation of). Rebuilt starter and all OK with VAN.

Now starter has gone again - same problems. Repair was good and there was no wear so problem must be caused by something. Stripped out starter again and this time there is quite a lot of black/grey mettalic dust. My questione are

- does this problem with starter suggest clutch problems

- does this van have the dreaded DMF clutch that has gained too much bad publicity (Y716 LBL)

- is it best to replace DMF clutch or go for conversion.

- can an ex-mechanic (me) do this clutch on his back with standard tools, either replacement or conversion.

- how much do the DMF clutch kits versus the single flywheel conversion kits cost and where can they be purchased

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
