noise from back of transit

Postby kalid » Tue Jan 05, 2010 1:46 pm

Recently my beloved has started to make a low thud noise as i am driving sounds like when a stone is in the tyre and when it hits the raod it makes a thud. All the tyres are clean and i have had the back axle and bearing on the prop changed 6 months ago. any ideas? :(

Does this occur empty, half load or fully laden? Or does it occur all the time?

Also, what Transit have you got?

You could always open the back doors and let the poor bugger get out! How hard does he need to bang on the doors?
Some people say I am stupid... I never realised I was that clever.

Check the leaf springs. There should be three layers of springs on each side of the rear axle. It is not uncommon for the middle leaf to break and fall off, not being noticed until the van sees an enthusiastic MOT tester.

Also check the rubber bump stops and the shocks. It would also be worth checking the LAV spring isn't broken or seized (this sometimes leads to snatchy rear brakes when unladen).
