Postby preky » Wed Jan 06, 2010 11:15 am

Hi, has anyone had this fault? transit 350 2.4 diesel, 2004 , alternator light on all the time but charging as normal!, we have fitted a new alternator, checked all fuses, fit a secondhand instrument cluster, replaced every relay, checked all the wiring, the wierd thing is,with the small 2 pin plug disconnected on alternator, the light comes on and goes off as normal when engine is run.. but no charge!!! it charges as normal when wires on and light on all time???

There's a fault on the charging circuit then. It may be something silly like a bad connection. It may be that your battery is on the way out, check the load and voltage drop while cranking over.

Have you tried grabbing fault codes? There may be an indication of the problem there. IME, the glowplug light doesn't always flash when a fault is recognised.

hi mate i had this problem my old 02 350 , i took it to an auto electrition who put a relay from a honda car and a couple of wires and although it didnt look great it did the job and its still on there today for the new owner of the van , he said at the time he thought the problem was in the main loom to the fuse box and would be a hefty bill to repair ,so he did his little repair job and charged me £10

Yes, same problem on this van but the wire this time was broken out of sight in the small loom over top of the engine. light comes on and goes off fine now.

hi mate, check the red wire from the 2 pin plug on the alternator, we have had 2 vans in today with the same problem, i joined the forum in desperation and can you believe an hour later a van came in with a visible broken wire, happy days, hope this helps you. Dave.
