hard to start

Postby brendan22 » Sat Jan 09, 2010 4:50 pm

hi,i have a 2004 125bhp lwb rwd transit and it has become very dificult to start first thing in the morning. Once started it will start first time all day.I have had the van from new and it has been very well serviced and recently had a new starter fitted.it has been mentioned to me that the timing chain or tensioner is worn but before i go down this route i would like some advise as this is out of my comfort zone not to mention expensive.

deffo sounds like the tensioner if you can get the fault codes from what i remember one of the codes will be about fuel timing which will be down to the tensioner. also if you no someone whit the ford ids machine it will tell if it has a outstanding recall which would be the tensioner.

thanks for all your advice, the mileage is 96k and the heater plugs were changed when this problem first arose. i asume that the fault codes would be obtained from conecting to a diagnostic machine. having owned the van from new i should have been notified of any recall regarding the timing tennsioner...hopfully.

our 125hp van is the same, it wont start unless on a hill start.. then starts ok the rest of the day, is this defenitly likely to be the tensioner??
what will this cost to fix? there is 210.000 on the van
