Heated mirrors, always on switch?

Postby Mike » Wed Jan 13, 2010 6:03 pm

Just wondering if it would do any harm to wire the heated mirrors so that I could have them on permanently in wet weather? They stay on long enough to clear the ice and snow but soon get messed up again.

The Merc Trucks we used to have had automatic electric mirrors connected to the outside temp guage.

Problem is in wet cold weather the mirrors get dirty very quick because the water hits them and dry's imediately.

Hmm, so having control over them is a good plan then.

According to the manaul for my van, the heated mirros operate when either the front of rear heated screen is on, So, Presuming your new van won't have rear windows, you could fit a rear window switch and use this to control only the mirrors, so you could put them on as often as you want, without having to put the front screen on :)

I'm guessing that the rear window heater system would also have a XX minute cut off. I think I'll just have to hijack the wiring after the relay and switch it from there.

yes its timed, and you could highjack it as long as it will take the load.

Looking at the wires the mirrors can't be drawing much current, but I'd pop a relay in with my switch anyway.
