Towbar connector wiring

Postby sjs205 » Sun Jan 17, 2010 1:28 pm

Hello all,

I am trying to wire up the electrics of my towbar. The towbar I have used is one I took off my old transit and in that case, i just had it wired into the left hand light cluster using scotchlocks. I was always having problems with this wiring and it always required a multimeter to get it sorted each time I started off with a trailer connected so this time i plan to do it properly with a soldering iron etc.

I have noticed on various posts that some transits have a connector on board that is meant for this purpose. I also notice on my van that I have a trailer light on the dashboard that sometimes blinks when i put the hazards on. With this in mind I am thinking that i should have one of these connectors but can't find it. Or at least i should have some way of wiring it in so the dashboard light works...

Any ideas? I have seen kits on ebay that would be perfect for connecting to the connector but i don't want to buy one unless I know it is compatible with my van - The company selling it say it should be but are unable to provide any more data on the unit.

Thanks in advanced,

Steven

It sounds as though your van may have had a towbar wired in already, have a look behind the rear lights for evidence

No, I'm sure it has not, the light on the dash is part of the factory fitted general instrument cluster.

I looked behind the rear lights for a socket but it doesn't seem to be there... It is not obvious anyway...

Cheers,
