transit alternator unit at rear cant find anything on it ?

Postby transitrecovery » Tue Jan 19, 2010 11:57 pm

Hi everyone whilst searching google for problems with my transit it kept coming accross articles from here so thought it would be a good place to sign up to i have had many transits over the years am familiar with most transit related problems. I have a 1993 K Reg recovery truck a very nice example to aid my car sales business, its the banana type engine, one question i am going to shortly replace the alternator as the light keep flickering on and stays on if i rev it a lot it goes out and seems to have a mind of its own, its now noisy as of today so i am presuming thats the problem.

But whats the unit on the back of the alternator with a braded metal pipe running to the engine ? and what does it do?

Vac pump is the unit on the back of the alternator.

thats what someone i know thought it was i take it its for the brakes cos it sounds noisy but i take it its not attatched to the alternator and i take it that its the alternator that is noisy not the vacuum pump lol

There is the alternator on the left, you can see the vac pump is attached to it at the back  What kind of noises :?:

its sort of whirring sort of noise which could sound like a bearing sort of noise and maybe even a small rattling sort of noise in there somewhere? sorry best way of describing it!

It could be the alternator or the vac pump causing the noise :?

Unbolt the vacuum pump (3x10mm headed bolts) and take the fan belt off. Spin the alternator - if its noisy you know where the noise is, if not its probably the vac pump
