Mk2 Di conversion?

Postby popuptoaster » Fri Jan 22, 2010 2:17 pm

Hi all, been a whuile but it looks like i've found myself a van, its a mk2 Ci camper, its coming with the pinto engine out and no gearbox, as it needs reassembling anyway i was wondering about a Di conversion, has anyone done this?

I'm handy with the spanners although dont know much about diesels, so hoping theres some tips about pitfalls etc.

Changed me mind anyway, suddenly came to me the reason i got rid of my diesel range rover was the abysmal slowness of it, i'm gonna look for an injected twin cam sierra as a donor instead i think, should be much better on fuel than a pinto and still have some go in it, 125bhp and more torque stock than a pinto, its also possible to drop the granada 16v head on for a bit more go if i get bored, less work than a 24v conversion and i already built one of those up in a Cortina. :D

If it was me, I'd either fit a turbo Di in it or a V6 :!:
Either one will pull well without having to scream the revs out of it to go :D

There is also the economics of it, i'm likely to be able to pick up a sierra engine and box for free by the time i weigh the remains in, a decent turbo Di will cost a bit more, and the 24v even more (clutch, gearbox, timing chain guides, exhausts etc etc)

I got good MPG out of the 24v in my cortina, it averaged 30mpg which is better than a pinto, but a twin cam will see 40+ mpg in a sierra, so i'd expect to get 30 out of a van driven steady, plus it will still have some go in it and should be pretty quiet, it wont need to have lots of low down pulling power as its never gonna have a full load, its only a SWB camper anyway.

Even if it turns out to be a terrible idea it shouldnt have cost much and i have to reassemble the van anyway so its hardly any extra work, if it turns out great i'll let you all know.

Anyone suggest a propshaft that will slide into the back of the MT75 gearbox and go on a SWB mk2 transit or will i have to get mine altered? On my Cortina i just welded the Sierra front half to the cortina back half but i suspect a transit one will be thicker so they wont mate up right.

My dad knows a guy who breaks granadas now i come to think of it, i may have a word with him as the Scorpio was available with a 2.3 I4, if its possible to find one with a manual box and get round the PATS i may try one of those, they are 150bhp stock.

someone just mentioned to me they thought the 2.3 twin cam was fitted in some transits anyway, anyone got any info on this? was it the same engine or a low compression version? how common are they? be nice to get a look at one or find out which bits i need to fit one into my mk2.

Right, ok, sorry to keep talking to myself, but would like to check some facts, according to the wiki the 1994 onwards smiley transit petrols came with the 2 litre 8 valve twincam but it had different ignition from the car version, the 2.3 wasn't fitted until the new transit in about 2000 although i dont know if there are differances from the car version.

I know the 2.3 is taller than the 2 litre as it runs balancer shafts in the sump so i reckon i'll stick with the 2 litre 8 valve for cheapness and ease of fitting and maybe upgrade later on, sorry for all the questions, i'll start a build thread when i get the van.

can i fit the prop from a mk3 smiley swb on to a mk2 swb?

I know the twink in the transit used a coil pack and a nice alloy rocker cover, so no leakiy warped plastic covers
And it meens there's ready made factory mounts out there, wether they are easyer to get than Cologne mounts i don't know ? but at least the MT75 will bolt on easy enough 8)
