How much to replace ball joint

Postby jacky » Sat Jan 23, 2010 4:10 pm

Put the van into a local garage for a checkup. The guy left a message to say it needs a ball joint replaced.

Any ideas on how much it should cost for the repair (or the max)

Van is an 04 plate 280swb

Cheers

the balljoint for my mk5 cost me £12 from my local motor factors, so i would guess 1 1/2 to 2 times the price (markup) and about 1.5hrs labour should be reasonable

a mk 5 balljoint is totally different to a mk6. mk5 bolt into the wishbone whereas a mk6 are pressed into the hub which are a pain to replace and need a hydralic press to be removed and replaced. also prepare to pay out for a new hub aswell because ive occasionally had them crack.

a bit of heat and a hammer gets them out no prob, then heat the hole again red hot and new cold ball joint just slips in nice

you do realise the inside of a ball joint is plastic which will melt

yes but you dont need the old one :?

you heat the hole then the new one just slips in, dont need to heat the new ball joint.

if you heat a hole and the metal round it expands then doesn't the hole get smaller :?: :?
best to drop the ball joint in liquid nitrogen too just mind your plums

i wasnt on about the old one. i meant when the new one goes in all the heat will go into the new one.

winterheatings right , the heat wont have time to have an impact on new ball joint, you could even freeze ball joint in your freezer, to give it a bit more protection.,.. next time i do one im going to call b.o.c get them to come round with there tanker , fill my liquid nitrogen bottle, and do it that way, after ive froze the warts of the witch next door.might get them to fill my rocket up with N2 and take a trip to mars,...n2 atomic number 7 what next

a spray bottle with water helps with that.
well ive done a few like this and theyve been spot on.

i think thats a better way than trying to knock a new ball joint in.
