Wont start - electrical problem for sure ?

Postby s2turbszvh » Mon Jan 25, 2010 4:43 pm

Hi - I am new here and have a 53 plate transit 2.0 diesel swb.

At the moment having a nightmare as it keeps failing to start.

It has had a new battery, new starter, new alternator all within the last 3 months - all new parts no recon or refurb items.

Been ok for a few weeks (about 3) but now all of a sudden its failing to start more often than not.

When i turn the key all ignition lights come on but nothing happens - no clicking sounds no nothing.

This lead me to think its the starter motor but when on jump leads it will fire every time - surely if starter problem the van would not start on jump leads - am i right ???

Anyway so I have had the battery tested and been told by the supplier that there is no problem with the battery - i went to two other garages as well for 2nd and 3rd opinions and told the battery is ok.

As far as I see it it can only be one of two things

a) The battery ? Not supplying enough crabking power is my thought so would a battery test be ok even if there is a problem with the cranking power in it ?
b) The starter ? Is there anything i should know about this as this is the second starter it has had in three months ?

Any ideas anyone - tests I can do etc etc ?

Thanks

I had this on my '01 2.0 SWB. Had the SM replaced twice but it ended up being the flywheel dust clogging up the contacts on the starter. I get the starter blown out every 4 months and all has been well since.

Cheers for the info - basically the jump is done from under the seat.

I have a feeling that it may be a flywheel problem as this is the second starter in as many months. The van does about 1000 miles a week so does get a lot of use.

Might be time to change to the SMF and ditch the old Dual mass one. Change the clutch whilst your at it. You can get the kit for £190 on ebag btw.

Hi I am new to this forum to , I have a 2001 swb 2.0 and having the same prob had a new sm bout 6 weeks ago worked fine for a week, but i know old one was broke, sometimes starts fine other time have to turn ignition on and off a few times it will start no prob then also in paperwork with new sm it says that a short earth lead with a inline fuse is a common fault and the sm is not faulty, but am reluctant to spend £40 on a lead and it could not be that, how common is the dust on the fltwheel?

Hi, i had the same problem around 2 years ago, wouldnt start, or would cut out for no reason, after disconnecting the immobiliser (under passenger side dash)this seemed to stop it, this was a last resort after going over everything else!
Now i have an issue with not starting well when cold! it seems never ending. :?

think the earth lead there on about is the one on the battery it has a fuseable link in it, just try normal earth lead on it to prove its not that, dont leave it on thou its there for a reason, having said that i would have thought if fuseable link was fooked nothing would work

I was thinking that too other things would not work, i think its a matter of trying different things untill i solve it. The imobiliser is a gd point too, is it easy to disconnect ?

the connection is just underneath the passenger dashboard,no problem to disconnect, but its a pain having to lock the doors manually now, but it sorted the problem out, these age of vans seem very unreliable!
