MORE WHITE SMOKE...!!!!!!!

Postby eurorep » Tue Jan 26, 2010 10:20 am

I know that this issue has been touched on but just need a bit more convincing before i go too far. Replaced snapped cam belt, head gasket set and push rods. Set timing..started ok. Slight problem yesterday but that was a short in the sensor wire that is not connected to my fuel filter on this engine. Changed the fuel filter anyway( topped up with fuel). Started ok this morning all though well below freezing. Van was running for about 10 minutes then massive amounts of white/grey smoke. Switched off before it stalled, went to re start but just clicks. Have not tried again. Is it possible the timing has slipped or the fuel timing is out. or is it more likely an incorrect valve..?

Just to post the latest update. I took the van out for a short spin,,same again ..White smoke.! When i eventually got back, lifted the bonnet and noticed black oil seeping from the air intake just before the EGR. On starting again, it ran ok..but i did not connect the pipe from the rocker breather to the top of the maniflod. I removed the cap and there was quite a fair pressure there..would this point to any valve problems..? I finally got the ORANGE LIGHT saga sorted..At sometime the sensor had been cut..the wires were bare, no insulating tape or blocks..! Blocked these seperatly...and bingo...the light went out..!

Sounds like you`ve lost or left a bolt out of rocker shaft (or core plugs out of ends of shaft).

Then rocker cover fills with oil which is sucked into inlet causing bad smoke :o

OK...never thought about the bolts in the rocker..i,m sure i got them all right but now doubts creep in. Nothing for it, i,ll just have to check all this in the morning. I,ll feel a bit of a prat if i,ve left a bolt loose or even worse if i,ve left one out..! I did read an earlier thread that a guy had the same problem and he just loosened the cap on the rocker cover,,,,,problem solved. That might have satisfied him but i cant give in that easy......need to finally find the answer to this problem. I,ll post after i check all.

Final instalment.. :( hopefully.! As its below zero here again i didn,t rellish the job but it had to be done. Getting all the bits off i checked each bolt holding the rocker shaft...sure enough one was very loose. After double check that all were as they should be, a quick shot of easy start and all went well. A short run never produced any bad smoke and the engine responded as it should do. I dont normally use easy start but there was a lot of black oil in the air intake so it didn,t seem a bad idea. Now i,m going to push it on the Autobahn, all the way.! If its gonna cock up i,d prefer that to it happening on my way back to UK. If i learned one lesson here it was to never assume things. After a major job, cam belt, head gasket set, new push rods, etc, etc, its easy to overlook the smallest detail as i did and did not check and re check my bolts.!

Alls well that ends well...drives fine....eventually. Foot down all the way, no coughing or smoking. I could be being picky but it did sound a bit tappy to me so i,ll double check that.
