Oil leak from around alternator

Postby tdb9 » Fri Dec 11, 2009 9:10 pm

My 2.5 di has started to drip oil at quite a rate from around the alternator. I have been out tonight to clean it all off to see exactly where the leak is from but have read lots of posts about o ring and oil seals on vac pump. Can anyone explain which is which. Pics would be helpful if possible.
I do have a complete spare alternator that I could fit from my old engine which is exactly the same unit but although this never used to drip it does seem to be wet with oil around the bottom so could be worth sorting them both.
I have put off the temptation to take the spanners to the one that is on the bench yet as I am unsure about what I will find when it is undone.

Any help will be much appreciated

Regards

Rob

The vacuum pump attached to rear of alternator is held on by 3 M6 bolts [10mm socket size]
Just undo these 3 bolts and split the pump from the alternator ... simples :D

There is a brown coloured O ring recessed inside the pump casing .. replace it.

hi
rebuild these all the time and can say with 100% certainty it wont be the o ring, unless the o ring was damaged when pump and alternator were assembled (highly unlikely) it will almost certainly be the oilseal in the rear of the alternator, the vac pump is lubricated by oil fed in at the rear this then drains back thro the drain at the bottom into the sump, this oil passes the oil seal goes thro the body of the alternator and then to floor, ford dont do these seals seperately,if you need one pm me
it was like that before i touched it !!

Does anyone know where I might get any of these seals from as I have still not sorted this leak. I have however removed the oil seal from my spare alternator as I believed I had 2 seals in the post.

Also could anyone tell me if a leaky vac pump will be an MOT fail as I got this in a few weeks but hopefully will have sorted before.

Thanks
