BLACK SMOKE WHEN HIGH REVS

i have noticed my 1999 trany giving puffs of black smoke out when changing gear at high revs also when driving in 5th gear if you put the foot to the floor it smokes alot usaly over 75 mph

any ideas what it could be

could be a few things.
clogged air filter,
incorect injection pump timing
needs a good service
fuel filter issue
fuel pump has been adjusted
1st thing id do is buy a fuel filter and run some DAE fuel diesel cleaner through it. put the cleaner in the filter and do it that way not in the tank.
then a oil and filter change.

Presuming your injectors are ok...Get someone to stand behind as you rev it, if you get puffs of black smoke at high revs then back off the torque screw on the top pf the pump in half turn increments till you get a reduction in smoke without a reduction in performance.
