Is there a way to change them without taking the head off?

Not that I know.

Put straight 40 or 50 oil in when spring arrives....smoke will stop...nearly...back to 20/50 in winter

They can be done but you will need a air line adaptor to pressurise each cylinder at a time with both valves shut. Then you need a tool to remove the valve spring. You could buy the tools or make your own like i did. I just copied the picture from an old haynes manual.

Someone just suggested that method on oldskoolford. Would be able to do it with a compression tester i spose, not that I have one at the moment. I'll take the head off and do it properly. Its got a lot of cam rattle, and i've got a 1600 head from my old capri that was silent, are they a streight swap for a bit more compression or am I thinking of something else?

Bit too mutch comp on a normal pinto but as yours is low comp? the valves are smaller on the 1.6 head as well

you can take the plugs out and feed rope in to the cylinder to fill up a bit then turn engine by hand to hold valve up in place , pop into gear to hold piston in place while working on valve

the one thing i cant remember is if you need the cam out to do this , if so you will need to pull the head as it comes out the back of the head

there used to be a tool available for the pinto heads years ago that used to screw into the ball stud threads, also one thing to note, the 1.6 head also has longer valves than the 2 litre, personally I would pull the head off and change the cam and followers for the 1.6 ones, meant to give better performance on the 2.0.
Its fairly easy to change the camshaft bearings too, something I would consider doing unless your has the bronze bearings, as they seem to be a bit more resilient than the white metal ones.

If the seals are leaking it quite often means the guides are worn as well.

Pretty sure most of the chamber volume is in the piston crown on the Pinto.

Yes the guides do wear quite badly on the pinto, but also the stem seals are weak and go brittle and then ride up the valve instead of clinging onto the guide top. a common conversion is drill out the guides, replace with guides of a slightly larger seal retainment diameter,(eq. to vag 96010) and use vauxhall cavalier fwd 8mm stem seals. As its a cheaper fix, a lot of people just prefer to change the stem seals

Followers are the same so no point in changing them, there is a tool that fits under the cam, you really need compressed air feed to hold the valves up or the rope trick works fine
In the past i've done it with a long prybar but DO NOT get it anywhere near the lobes of the cam
It takes a while for the valve seals to harden and lift (IE years) i allways just use standard and not had a problem, appart from once with a cheap set of unknown make, 1 kept riding up so i had to change it after the rebuild (hense the use of the prybar and rope), never had a problem with payen or better seals, on some oval track engines i've seen CVH seals used with the plate the spring holds in place to stop the seals popping up at high revs but unessersary on a road engine IMHO.

1.6 - 37,5 to 40,5 cm'
2.0 - 48,6 to 51,6 cm' HC and LC but the LC engine has shallower piston crowns

and my mk3 transit, capri and granada mk2
there is just something about these engines........

I remember the days where we used to use a Buerete (spelling a long glass tube) to measure the Volume etc of the Formula Ford Pinto's my old boss used to build. They had to be spot on as we always had some one lodge a protest against the engine and ended up stripping it for the scrutineers

To be Honest the time it takes to remove a pinto head why mess around trying to do anything with it in situ
