where to fill rear diff on mk 5 transit, help please

Postby D-Sport » Fri Apr 02, 2010 3:24 pm

hi all
heres the thing,
i bought a transit recovery truck recently, its a 98 mk 5 2.5 non turbo, the guy must have placed the slide under ramps too close to the rear diff casing and its rubbed a hole thru it,

two things, (1), the diffs just started on the way home 50 miles ago to make a whine, it got kinda hot, is it f*** or will a fill of oil sort it??????, also where is the hole for filling it up????

(2).. would something like the putty stuff that turns rock hard when u mix the two ends of it together fix the hole on the casing or should i change the casing, im sure there are bolts all the way around it,

appreciate any help

if you give it a good clean so theres no rust ,oil or whatever round the hole ,then use a little tape to cover the hole and just over it you can key the clean metal without any thing going inside , then the epoxy putty should grip ( leave tap on so no putty drops inside ) , as to the whine , it may be ok with refill but its a guess , if not then you may as well get second hand axle and swop out the whole thing instead of fitting new diff into holes casing

the fill point is on the passenger side of the diff, at the front and about half way up. has a female square headed drive

hi there, thanks for that, it has bolts all around it so ill take it off and mend it off rather than risk as you say stuff falling in, its not really a hole just a chaffed cover which has the oil leaking thru,

if it doesnt fix the whine would a guy get away with it for a few weeks until i get a chance to swap a different diff into it???, it wouldnt just seize up with oil in it would it?

I would say its unlikely to suddenly fail spectacularly, more likely to get louder and rumble more beofre it goes bang
