oil in sump 2.5

I have 2 2.5 l NA diesels fitted to my boat. I put it in the water on monday and 1 of the engines overheated and when I checked the heat exchanger the water level had dropped ,I topped it with hot water but it kept dropping. I dipped the sump and it was full of emulsified oil. I thought I had cooked it so I changed the head gasket today, but after changing the oil and filter when the engine heated up the water level dropped and the oil level climbed and was full of mayonaise. The cooling system is not gassing up and there is no oil in the water so I am guessing that I have a crack somewhere. Does anyone know where these engines crack due to lying in cold weather as I dont think it has an oil cooler and the only place which I think that the water is in contact with non pressurised oil is either the block or the cylinder head, the only things I done to this engine while it was out of the water was change the sump and plumb in a calorifier.

if it was left over winter with any water in i would look at the core plugs , freezing water can push them out and if its one of the small ones in the head it can dump water right into the oil

there was a thread a few weeks ago about this in a van , have a search ( guess "core plugs" or "water in oil" will find it )

It is not a core plug as the water is going into the oil and only when it is under pressure, if a core plug comes out it leaves a 30 mm diameter hole in the engine and the water runs out of it as soon as you fill it. I put a pressure tester on it today and when I pumped it up I could hear water pouring into the sump as I could not see water down the pushrod tubes and when I removed the head there was no sign of crack I have came to the conclusion that if the head was cracked the water would have to pass the cam followers and would not pour into the sump but would have to find its way down I am sure there must be a crack between the liner and the cam followers, I have came to this though not being an expert on ford engines I am a diesel fitter and I will look at fitting another short engine as there are plenty of them about, Thanks for all the input to this Thread, Stevie

i think there are some small ones in the head which is why i thought of it , it could have cracked the block above the crank / cam area if there was only water in the block from a part drained engine i guess

Cracked block possably/ sounds exactly like my old Di but mine went on for 40K like it so it must have a huge crack, i used to drive flat out from London to liecester and empty out maybe 1/4 ltr of water from the sump then just drive home and repeat
Leaked less if i left the exspansion bottle cap loose as well

Could there be a hole in the heat exchanger that is letting water in the exhaust manifold?

Had that problem on my mate's boat.

Hi no Im sure its the block because if it was the heat exchanger the water system would presurise up when the engine is running also it would just blow out the exaust and not find its way to the sump I can hear the water pouring into the sump when I pump the cooling system up and there was no water in the cylinders when I removed the head.
