problem, diff leaking at driveshaft end

Postby D-Sport » Sun Apr 04, 2010 11:14 am

hi guys, my diff ran out of oil due to the back casing getting damaged by the sliding ramps underneath rubbing off it, it could have ran for 60 to 100 miles without oil and the diff when i got home was very hot, i fixed that problem yesterday and filled it back up with oil but this morning i found a few splatters of oil coming from the front of the diff (on the garage floor) where the drive/ prop boolts on, im guessing there is an oil seal there and if f***, can it be changed? or is it a new diff or will it be ok and just need a fill of oil every now and then, the van is a 98 transit recovery and doesnt get used very often only to ferry a cosworth around ireland to track days etc. all help very much appreciated

I would just keep an eye on it personally. My bet is that the diff is going to get noiser and noisier so I would still be looking out for a new axle

I'd say you've fooked the pinion beraring and the play is causing the leak :(
Grab the flange and give it a dam good wiggle if it moves at all it's stuffed and needs to be changed but it's not really an easy job, new crush washer and the preload on the bearing needs setting up as well as a new seal.

ok shook the front part of the diff and there is a very very very tiny bit of play, i mean nearly nothing, im sure after 90k miles that would be normal, also no sign s of anymore leaks, i did have the van driving while up on axle stands when i found the first drop of gear oil, maybe ill put it back on the stands tomorrow again and drive it and then see but the play if any is miniscule
