How to get metal particles out of glass?????

Postby mooney_d373 » Tue Apr 06, 2010 12:26 am

I have just been looking at my mk2 tranny to see what jobs need doing for the resto and found that the windscreen, the door quarter glass and main door glass has got what looks to be grindering sparks in the glass and have gone rusty. :(

Does anyone know how to clean the glass or get rid of these rusty marks?????? Also does anyone know how to remove the windscreen and rear cab window because I'm not sure if they are bonded in?? :(
When in doubt!! Diff it out!!!

i doubt you will get the metal out it will have melted its way into the glass ( seen a lot of vans with weld spatter in the glass ) iirc the glass is held in by rubber gasket on a mk 2 but dont quote me on that

 Thought it would be new glass. lol. Can you still get glass from stockist or is it a second hand search?

Just noticed I've got a chip in the windscreen aswell but don't think I'll get Gavin from autoglass to inject his special resin now

There id a company that polishes out duff wiper marks (you know where the muppets too tight to replace a 50 bob blade!), I learnt the hard way with weld platter...

a brand new stanley blade works if you use it like a scraper.

I'll give both them ideas a go. cheers mates!! :D

I've seen at Machine Mart they've got a glass polishing kit for about £25 mark and you can use it for toughened and laminated glass to polish out scraps and the like. I wonder if that'll do out :?:

As soon as I can I'll post my findings. wish me luck :!:

Probably won't get the grind particles right out with a polishing kit...but youmight reduce the visibility a little.
Windscreen is held in with a rubber seal, all very conventional.
I've changed the screen on a Mk1, not hard.

:) A stanley blade scraper will pick the metal particles out OK but you'll be left with what looks like small stone chips on the glass. Only one cure for them, new glass. :(

:?: Not sure if your roads are chipsealed like ours are, but our comprehensive insurance includes 1 free windscreen a year because of it ................... . Not that I would ever advocate doing something dodgy, but grinder spatter would probably be a valid claim.
