Repairing exhaust manifold with JB Weld?

Postby trippydog » Mon Apr 19, 2010 9:50 am

My manifold is cracked and while hunting for a replacement also had a quick search for repair options and came across this:

http://askville.amazon.com/cracked-exha ... Id=3749830

Anyone used this stuff for a similar application? Any good?

Cheers.

Sounds like it could be worth a shot then. Any idea how other brands compare? Looked at maybe Araldite Rapid Steel (as I can get it within walking distance at halfords) but seems all the araldite epoxies are only good to 65 degrees C.

Used it on alsorts including fixing a boiler heat exchanger :!: Can't see any epoxy lasting the temps you get at the manifold though

i dont think jb weld will take the heat cycles on an exhaust

theres so much movement that it will break the bond and flake off and an exhaust will get way hotter than its rated range 500*F /290*C

better to bight the bullet and have it welded

I could MIG weld it but I couldnt guarantee how long it would last...

Which bit of the manifold is it (yours is a turbo isnt it?)

Cheers for the offer, welding cast seems a pain so kinda discounted that but might be worth trying.

The crack is at the bottom, just about visable inside (I think.. it's a bit black!) I'll try and get a pic later.

Yeah it's a turbo. It's not been blowing at the manifold but got it off to sort the threads on the turbo-manifold joint as that was f*** and saw the crack (along with a broken lug on the downpipe).

get it gas brazed ;) nice and easy and will not distort it , will do for a good while if not for ever

mig will make it crack more as the heat is in a small area , with brazing it can be pre warmed and then allowed to cool slowly even adding more heat to slow the cooling

any welding shop will know how to do it they may even have an oven to control heat up and cooling
