Alternator wiring

Postby ian_allen » Mon Apr 26, 2010 11:11 am

Hi, I am new to this site as I have just bought my first transit to convert into a camper. I have a Transit N reg lwb 2.5 diesel minibus. The problem is the alternator wiring I think. I have checked the forum but cant find an answer. I have replaced the stator and bearings and everything to do with charging (it came with the van as a kit for the alternator). I rebuilt it and put it on the bus and the charging light is on on the dash. There are 3 wires that connect to the alternator, #1 a thick black one (left side as looking down on it), #2 blue with black line (middle wire looking down) and #3 grey wire with black line (on right of the 3 wires). The alternator is the type with the pump on the back. Can anyone please tell me if the #2 and #3 wires are in the correct places as they came off in this order. The alternator is reconditioned with the new parts and should be charging but the red light says otherwise. With engine running on tickover, I have a multimeter reading of 12.31v. Before starting, I am sure the reading was 12.61v. I think I may have to get another alternator. Thanks for any help

Yip for sure your alternator is not charging, as a rule of thumb you should be seeing at least 13.7v on meter. If the battery is in a poor state of charge it may take a few minutes to hit that value .

I have found out that after fitting the new parts to the alternator, it is still not charging ang the wires are on in the correct way. I will be fitting a new alternator now. Thanks
