PATS bypass

Postby Galahad » Thu May 06, 2010 8:41 am

Please feel free to PM me the answer to this question for security reasons.

I have an engine from a W reg Smiley Transit, its a Turbo Diesel engine, as i'm fed up with just 2.5 DI 'power' as getting up hills with heavy cars is proving to be slow and noisey!

I understand that bypassing the PATS system is quite straight forward, simply removing the security casing from the back of the pump and using a standard stop solenoid from either a Lucas CAV or Bosch pump in place of the original solenoid.

Is this remotely right? I don't fancy transferring over all the associated wiring into my F reg Beavertail, as i'm sure it'll be tiresome and annoying.

Can't be done on the Lucas EPIC pump, you would need to do the mechanical pump conversion to a Bosch 145/146.

Well I just found out today that the W reg donor is all fly by wire stuff so that complicates matters.

Am I able to use the Lucas CAV pump on my DI engine on the Turbo engine or do I have to go the Bosch route?

Have a look on the forum for mechanical pump conversion, you'll find all the info you need.

Thanks for that, but it doesn't tell me if I can use the Lucas CAV pump or not, as thats the one I have and would rather utilise rather than having to spend more money.

The short answer is no, you can't use the Lucas pump without grafting on all its operating ancilliaries. The only feasible conversion uses the Bosch pump

Balls! Well looks like i'll be selling the complete engine then! :)

So, the Bosch pump I need, what age Transit am I looking to raid the pump from? Obviously pre-PATS system, but a clear indicator would be good please folks as I only want to do this once and I can't use my truck once I start doing the conversion.

The best pump to use is the Bosch 145/146 ver 686 pump which was used on a lot of the late Smileys. These frequently come up on ebay so keep a look out.
Having said that, any Bosch pump will do the job, but not as well as the one above :D

The PATS units on these pumps can be safely removed before fitting to a different engine

Thanks for that.

Would you happen to know if the 1 465 530 662 pump is any good?
