tdci camshft sensor

hello i just scaned a mates van which is a 55 plate 2.4 tdci the fault come up as cam sesor it wont start now yesterday when he started it was black smoking then white smoking & he said it sounded realy rough has the tdci got a cam sensor & if so does anyone know where it is please i no the tddi does not have a cam sensor , but not sure about tdci any help please

tdci cam sensor is in side of camshaft box about 2/3 of the way along ,you will see a couple of wires,not saying thats problem camshaft sensor ,and crankshaft sensor codes tend to come up with other problems,have a look at intercooler pipe work make sure theres no splits or damage,could be quite a few things, when was timing chain tentioner changed,could be worth taking camshaft cover off and having a look for loose bolts /cracked carrier,etc dont cost owt to have a look,you can get camshaft cover off with out taking injectors out but you need to take the seals out of the cover

bit off update on van had a look last night & it turns out they flatened the battery & tryed to tow starting it, has all the symtoms of timing jumped so will pull covers of at weekend & let you no

yes not a good idea to tow these vans/tentioner works with oil pressure as well as spring.oil pressure hasnt time to build up when towing,if you ever as a last resort have to tow start van put it in gear but dont touch the clutch so engine turning straight away to build pressure up,hope camshaft carrier is ok for you,and its something else

stripped wan & sure enough its cracked the cam carrier , but one thing sumeone has said to me is the cam lobs are pressed on & not one complete casting & some time when valves strike the pistons it can knock the cam lobs out of sink when you look at the cams you can see the right cams on no 1 cylinder are not in line, has anyone come across this ?????

Towed my TDCI a couple of weeks ago.
135 T350 2.4 TDCI

Bumped started it. or tried to.
Wrecked the Cam Carrier / Cam Box.

I had to get a recon head and Cambox (complete with springs) - as they are a "Together" unit.

You will also require..... Full Head Gasket Kit Approx £100+vat (Not direct from Ford)
Head Bolts... Approx £30.00

Optional:
Timing Chain: £75+Vat
New Tensioner Approx £55+Vat

Mine is still currently still off the road as we cannot get it to start now.
Due to low fuel pressure and fuel bleading problem.

Not a fun vehicle at all.

just had a look at a camshaft and it does look like there heat shrinked /froze on,(unusual normaly one piece),,each pair of lobes should be in line with each other,when you take head off it will be obvious if theres any damage to piston,,the only gasket i got for mine was a head gasket didnt need any others,just buy what you need,i even used my old head bolts,after checking them with thread gauges see if they had stretched, depens what you can afford,but should use new bolts,dont forget to put cht back into new head before you fit it as its a pain to do after you have fitted it,new camshaft if needed can be purchased for £50 of ebay ,head and camshaft carrier are a matched pair,there lazer etched on side of head and carrier (just check if you buy second hand),use a good sealant on timing chaincase the ford one is excellent but expensive,i use a cheaper one with good results.

if you suspect piston has been hit with valve check piston hights just incase a rod has bent slightly
there are 3 different thickness of head gasket /denoted by cut outs or dots or both ,towards the front of head gaskets

are you sure timing is correct as it can be a b**stard to find the correct cut out on fly wheel,did you use a new crankshaft sensor or old one,if old one have you the correct air gap, just check the crankshaft sensor housing isnt loose and you havnt damaged it /cracked it when using pins by maybe turning engine slightly with pin in place,give it a good shake
is it something simple like not correct fitted fuel pipe,
these tdci are normaly quite easy to bleed as its a high pressure fuel pump
are injectors in right cylinders they came from
im sure you no what your up against just throwing a few ideas into the pot
i it take you had codes read somewhere and its came up low fuel pressure
was it on ids where you can check cranking pressure
not sure but if you keep cranking these think fuel gets cut off resulting it code coming up low fuel pressure,hence it not being a low fuel pressure problem,jst seems that way
sure one of the techs could explain a bit more
hope it aint your fuel rail sensor as its part of the rail and there £280 from ford

upon checking piston hights as the valves have hit very hard it has droppped a couple of the pistons down , sadly it look like its bent con rods turning out to be a exspensive tow start this one

You probably need a new fuel pump and injectors
