Faulty gearbox

Postby Strawbs » Wed May 12, 2010 9:21 pm

Hi
I have a transit t260 2.0 fwd swb with 70000 miles on for some time now i have had problems with it jumping out of gear. it happens when you are pulling off from a junction, as you pull away it will suddenly jump in to netrual and puts you in a scary moment. Also when changing down it will jump out of second gear. I have been told it needs a new gearbox but thought i would ask questions before i buy a new one.
Any ideas would be much appriciated.
Cheers

Have you had cables adjusted ?
most likely cause, may need grey cable adjusting/replacing.......
Certainly other cheaper things to check before shelling out on a box :!:

The jumping out of 2nd can be due to not properly engaging the gear in the first place. This can be due to cable adjustment or the selector shaft on top of the gearbox partially seizing. Unfortunately if you drive too long like this it evenyually wears the edge off 2nd gear!

Been reading with interest all the stuff re 2nd gear etc.... I have a 280 (115k) and I have a similar problem with 2nd. The shift up or down to 2nd feels good but when I lift the clutch it isn't in and GRRRR. I am not sure the gear was engadged in the first place as it doesn't 'kick' out of gear. Tends to get worse as it warms up? The 5th gear gate isn't always there and a second try to go right is needed? The 'turret' on top of the gear box has been replaced and I wonder if the 'cables' mentioned might need attention? cheers.
