Don't know what fault you have as you don't say but my guess is your van is turning over slowly, probably due to the DMF breaking up and clogging the starter.

Something wrong if you're getting that while cranking!

What is the battery voltage when nothing is running? A good battery should be around 11.5 to 12.5 volts, this will rise to about 13 when charging.

If it is dropping to 9 volts when cranking it sounds like it has lost a cell, does it smell eggy, or does it give off steam when you try to crank it over? Is it getting hot. I would take the battery to a garage and get it discharge tested this will confirm if you have a good battery or not. Before getting into paying out any money check all the battery leads and connections including engine earth strap, if anything is even slightly amiss in this department then you will have no end of problems trying to turn the engine.

Cheers..........Howard

Not disagreeing with you MrM, as you are far more knowledgeable than me with transits. But its always worth a look at the basics before forking out any of the hard earned in my opinion. :)

Couldn't agree more but that's hard to do with duff information, that's why I posted the links showing correct voltages.

It might be worth while checking the fluid level in your battery aswell and if you can see the metal finns inside, top it up with distiled water, i did this and it saved me having to buy a battery, when i check my batteries i only check one cell at a time and put the cover back on asap just to be on the safe side.

Your battery and starter sound fine, the problems are with the engine, hence the smoke.
