Alternator and voltage regulator?

Hi, was wondering if anyone could explain the difference between the alternator and the voltage regulator? My understanding is that the regulator is attached to the alternator, but is it a seperate replaceable component? Giving you the full details, my tacho stopped working and then 2 days later the battery was flat. I did some multimeter tests, and established no charge to the battery (no dashboard warnings, and no belt slip). So I have a problem with the alternator or the voltage regulator yes? How should I deal with it, just take the van to an auto electrician/alternator exchange shop... ?

The voltage regulator is indeed part of the alternator. On some types of alternator you can take the regulator out but it is unlikely that you would be able to get a replacement or if it is the problem.

Best to get an exchange unit or get your unit checked and/or rebuilt by a specialist.
