Advice On New Van

Hiya,

I'm looking for some advice on getting a new van.

I already have a 280, 90ps but am now looking at buying a new trailer.

The trailer weighs in at 2600kg and it seems that the van I have will not be up to it as the GTW is only 3500.

What would be the least acceptable and then the best option of Transits out there.

It may just be able at a push to go for a MK6 if finances allow but what about a good MK5, is there one available with a engine and GTW available.

Would love a MK7 There is just no way at the moment that's going to happen.

I'm thinking the MK5 is a van that can be repaired a bit easier and cheaper than a MK6 if there is problems, would I be right in thinking that?

Looking for advice and the best options that are out there at this time.

Hi Sparky,
I would prefer the Mk5 for all round reliability but the dreaded rust worm appears far too often! Think a RWD Mk 6 would be your best option. Go for the 115 ps and you should be good.

or get a late mk5 turbo diesel(100ps is the better buy or the rare 115ps)hopefully it wont be to rusty..check the vin plate for GTW(will be on the step on a mk5 on the passenger side(drivers side has the vin number as well)

You need a 330/350 (mk6/7) or a 150/190 (Mk3/4/5)

Are all of the MK6 330/350's plated at 5500 GTW?

The trailer loaded comes in at 2560 but may have a little extra stock in now and again.

I'm guessing I can tell it's a 330/350 by the black plate under the wing mirror, how can I tell with a MK5 what it is without looking at the vin plate.

5500 GTW would be enough right? there won't be a lot of stuff in the van.

190 mk6 will be either 6 stud single axle or double rear wheel...mk6 isnt always on the mirror plate(my 280 has no markings on it from the outside)
btw is this for commercial use or private only as remember tacho needed for over 3500 gtw for commercial use.

A MK5 150/190 will have 15inch 6 stud wheels
Only RWD MK6 330/350 will be plated high enough, the FWD ones has a lower train weight
