2.0 Pinto Problems once warmed up

Hi, this is my first posting on here.

The problem doesn't actually relate to a Transit but as there seems to be wealth of knowledge on here about the Pinto Engine I thought you guys would be my best shot.

I have bought a Kit Car with a 2.0 Pinto Carb'd engine with a fault.

It starts and runs fine for about 30 minutes then misfires and dies. Trying to restart when hot results in backfiring and sometime flames from the exhaust.

The following have been changed:

Plugs, leads, distributor (for s/h one), cap, fuel filter, fuel pump, brand new carb fitted, ignition module, coil.

The car has been run with the fuel cap off but this makes no difference either.

I haven't checked the valve clearances yet as everyone I have asked immediately says 'its electrical' although I will try these at the weekend.

Any help would be gratefully received!

have you done a compression test?

This kind of problem with the 'Pinto' engine has been covered a few times before. Certainly, in my case I had trouble with the automatic choke on the VV carburettor. Presumably you have eliminated that by changing the carburettor?

I intend to do a compression test when cold and again when the problem starts although I understand the former owner did this with nothing remarkable results wise. The carb is brand new although it does smell like it is running very rich which doesn't go away even when the engine is warm so theoretically I guess the new carb could have a faulty auto choke. This would be a huge coincidence but still possible I guess. I will whip out the plugs at the weekend when I have a minute and do a compression test and look at their colour and report the findings back.
