FITTING 2ND DIESEL TANK

Postby EIRE SALVAGE » Sun Jun 27, 2010 10:14 pm

Hello every one
I have a swb smiley transit diesel i do alot of mileage between England and Ireland but the diesel is currently alot cheaper in Ireland (and euro alot weaker /customs wont let you carry drums/gerry cans through the ports)my question is has anyone fitted a 2nd tank on the RHS of smiley shape before plan is to cut in 2nd filler neck in b pillar and use filler pipe from LHS but exhaust runs along LHS as well which makes a normal smiley tank impossable just wondering can anyone think of a tank that might be the correct size or would i be able to get one fabricated (would like to be able to fit a transit sender unit so i can wire into orignal gauge on 2way switch) then using a electric fuel pump transfer the fuel from 2nd tank into orignal tank when it starts to run low any ideas appreciated Mick

If you link the tanks at low level you wouldn't need a second sender or pump as the levels would equalise.

Be fine if it's done properly.

for the filling neck the trick is to link it into the original filler neck - as long as you put it in the right spot/at the right angle you'll fill the original tank first and the add on tank second

or if you do have separate fillers...... you can connect the breather of your 1st tank to the fuel supply of the 2nd tank.... that way as fuel is sucked out of the 1st tank by the engine.... the 1st tank will suck in fuel from the 2nd instead of air ! (air comes in via the 2nd tank breather) - this is how they do it on a lot of big trucks, and is why they have a sign saying 'fill this tank first' on one of the tank ;-)
