exhaust gas recirculation,basicly takes some of the exhaust gases back in to engine to help reduce emmissions,and also help keep the combustion chambers cooler,but in essence,after a period of time clogs up inlet manifold lessening engine breathing and reducing performance,thats why most block it off when able to as its not realy nessary,if you gave us more info on what engine you have we could tell you where its located
