Cannot engage gears

Postby Bago » Tue Jul 13, 2010 10:14 pm

Hello,

I have a SWB low top 150 Custom Mk5 Smiley and the clutch biting point is suddenly 'on the floor' and I can't select any gears. The only way I can drive it, is to turn the engine off, select a gear and start it up, then I'm stuck in the gear I have chosen.

Is it clutch or gearbox, any ideas would be most appreciated.

Cheers
Ian

Thanks mate, I tightened the nut and now I can get all gears. However, first is really stiff and notchy to engage, but now and again it goes in smoothly. Not very often though. Most times its a fight to get first gear. Any more ideas?

Thanks very much for your time.

Cheers

If you tightened it and now you are getting gears its probably the cable, you should change it before it snaps all together. Hopefully its not the pressure plate on the way out but they are not too hard to change although adds more expense you will know once you,ve got the new cable in

Did one last week where the operating arm inside the bellhousing had broken and was bending? might be worth a look in the side with a torch

Thanks Guys,

It was indeed the operating arm Ollie. It was also the nose cone on the gearbox I'm told and selectors. We've changed the operating arm, clutch and still it was dodgy going into first. I managed to get a 63,000 mile box from a scrapper and flushed and changed all the fluids and it's as slick as can be now!

Cheers
