MK2 Alternator

Postby badger » Wed Jun 22, 2005 10:13 pm

Hello all,

I have just found your site and found it very useful. I have a 1982 MK2, which I am currently restoring as a campervan.

I hope someone can offer me some advice. The alternator has gone and I have been looking for a cheap replacement, does anyone know what other ford alternator will fit as I was going to see what they had on ebay.

Hope some one can help.

Thanks

Toby

Hi badger, welcome. I don't think alternators are too expensive (petrol or diesel BTW?), try your local motor factors or scrappie. If you buy a 2nd hand one, make sure the light isn't on, even faintly, when the engine is running (make sure the heater fan is off). If it is and gets dimmer when you switch someting on GET IT CHECKED. At best this can cook the battery, at worst cause a wiring fire that could take the whole van with it. The wireing loom passed over the air filter, and if the air cleaner catches you are in trouble. It's a common fault with the Mk2, from day 1.

If it's a pinto (petrol) you can use a cortina, capri,or Mk2 granada alternator as long as it's a pinto engine it will fit.
If you get one from a granada or sierra the wiring will need altering as they are bolt on wires not the plug type but as a bonus if it's from a Ghia it'll be a higher powerd unit ideal if you have twin batterys :D .
