Automatic Speedometer Cable

Hi Guys
I am here because I have a problem with my 1998 Ford Transit Automatic 190 lwb Motor home. The speedo
Stopped working.
With out putting my vechile out of action by stripping out the dash board to check.
Can anyone inform me what form of action is required, I suspect that the drive cable is Broken.
Fords informed Me that there are no replacement cables for Automatic Vans avalible. But I have
Read on the forum that there may not be a cable but a sensor on the gearbox.
What do I look for and if it is a cable has anyone got an idea how I can get a replacement?
I have tried most of the breakers. Wih out any luck.

Look at your speedo dial, if the trip counter reset button is to the left of the trip digits, then you have a speedo cable.

If not, you have an electronic speedo with no drive cable, just wiring

Thanks for the Tip.The Reset is on the left . So it would appear that I have a problem Any idea what I can do now as there does not seem to be any cables out there for an automatic?

I would guess that the short answer would be to fit a set of later electronic clocks, and a new speed sensor in the gearbox, but I'm sure one of our auto wizards will be along soon to advise

The reason I ask, is that AFAIK, all automatic smiley (MK5) Transits had a VSS (electronic Vehicle Speed Sensor)

If it's a cable, I'd be tempted to undo either end and pull out the inner cable and see if it can't be matched up from a manual box version at the motor factors

Woodn't you konw it never rains but it pours Loking at the, what I think is the cable coming out of the gearbox I found that the catalitic converter elbow section is cracked I expect It will also be obsolete .

Are you sure it's a cat, or is it just the flexi section of the front pipe

It doesn't need to have a cat fitted, so you can replace it with a non-cat pipe

That's a relief I was dreading the cost of a new
Catalytic Converter it could well be the flexi section. I will also need a new front box.

Well got away with out having to fit a cat But still can't find a cable for my Speedometer, any one got an idea how to covert it to an electronic system? How would it fit on to the gearbox?
Can someone also explain how it is that the rev counter still works where does it get it's information as there is only the one cable that I can see?
