Insurance for extra seats

Postby denmark » Sat Sep 04, 2010 10:03 am

Hi all,
I am fitting an extra seat (genuine ford) in the back of my van (mk6 LWB) so rang up the insurance to notify them, and I got a straight refusal unless the seats are fitted professionally. They said that my account was now tagged with my intentions and if I proceeded to fit the seats my insurance is void, which was nice :(
Anyway question is, can anyone recommend an insurance company that is a bit more flexible, or a seat installer that works for peanuts :D
Thanks in advance of any and all help.

Check out the 'moving the bulkhead' thread, a chap on there has moved his seats and he said his insurance co were fine with it.

Edit: Here you go.

Very interesting reading Mike, maybe a £50 runabout with 5 seats is the order of the day.
Thanks for the reply

Timo, great looking van, your extra seats were partly what made me want to add seats instead of coughing up for a run about.
My van needs to stay as a van for work, i just want to find an insurance company that will allow me to fit the extra seats. I want to do the work myself, and am prepared to get it vosa checked and the like so its all correct and fit for purpose.
When i called my insurance today they said it could only be done by a professional installation company if they were to insure it. Also my file was now tagged with what i wanted to do, incase I went ahead and fitted them anyway, and a claim followed etc.
Who do have your insurance with ? Is your van still classed as a van ?
Cheers for the links and the help :D
