rust attack

Postby bouncymat » Sat Sep 04, 2010 12:43 pm

hi
i am after a bit of advice.
this morning i started having a poke at the rusty patch on the sill under the sld.
i started with this...

and found this underneath...
Image
what i found is much worse than i was expecting so i thought i'd ask the experts.

should i -
1. fill it paint it and deal with the problem properly next time it flares up?
2. cut section out and get someone to weld in a patch?
3. (not sure if this is possible) replace whole sill?

probably very simple questions for you guys but i am new to all this.

van is 55 mk6 swb

before you say anything - being a transit i knew that it would rust, i just thought i might get a couple more years before there were holes!

thanks
mat

Depends on what you want to do and what you can afford, best would be replace the cill but you could cut out, weld a patch in and fill over, that's disgusting for a 55 reg van, they say on here about mk5's being rusty but i reckon mk6's will be even worse when they are as old as mk5's are now

well i want it to be as good as i can get it and i suppose that does of course mean replacing the whole area. maybe what i need to ask is how much its going to cost me to get someone to cut out an replace that section followed by where do i get the part from.

If it were me and someone else was to fix it, and I was planning on replacing a whole panel I'd choose a smaller local garage or mobile welder and watch them every minute. One of my Mk5's was an ex hire vehicle and had the inevitable replacement front wing from a minor collision done at a major bodyworks company. When I got around to taking the said wing off years later as it was rusty I discovered the gits with the spot weld drills had gone through about another two panels and not given them any protection afterwards so that rust crept in between inner and outer A pillar which then turned out to be a major job, all because someone was lousy with the drills and when they made a mistake didn't bother to weld the hole up and prime it.

Time is money and with a new wing you'd never know it had been in an accident, but its what you can't see that counts, especially if its for keeping.

Buy yourself some cutting discs, a replacement panel and some spot weld drills. Make everything ready by aligning/cutting and grinding back to bright steel and you'll save yourself a packet as that is where the work is at. Welding is the easy part.

Take a Mk5 apart panel by panel and galvanise! Then put it all back together again. That's my plans, at least with the chassis and c members....Will never have to buy a pickup again!
