Is it possible to fit an auto box to a mk5 diesel engine, and if yes does anyone know how much work would be involved

yes but you need a early auto box that hasnt got the electric bits on it.As later boxes are controlled by the engine ecu. sometimes easier to just change the van or buy a compleate van and change over loom and engine and box..

To convert yours correctly (which has a Bosch manual pump) you really need a MK4 Di auto donor :!:
Parts req;
Diesel autobox
Converter
Flywheel
Cross member support for the autobox and rear "engine" mount
Prop shaft
Selector assy
Pierburg valve
Pipes for Pierburg valve
Kickdown cable
Speedometer cable
A bit of wiring for the inhibit/reverse light switch
Oh and a BIG oil cooler (and pipes)

Is what comes to mind at the moment :!:

They did make the mk5 in diesel with the autobox.
I'm just bought a complete van(turbodiesel) and completly took it appart. :D
This will be the new drivline for my mk2!!
See also my topic in the mk1&mk2 section.

Sorry.........
But, don't be jealous, the mk5 was a LHD anyways (i'm from the Netherlands), and as the driveline is nearly new (literally) the rest of the van had loads of rust!!
So no MOT anymore, a very fine example to use as donor vehicle to realy update my mk2.

@frank you used the engine and loom though..OP was asking to use his engine and fit that box you have..your box wont work properly without the ecu as the engine talks to the gearbox through the ecu and box will change as needed...
