fan belt snapped and overheating!

Postby solarman » Thu Oct 07, 2010 9:13 pm

Took the van for a short spin(couple of junctions on motroway) after recently adjusting fan belt for better charging of battery, just before i came to last junction battery light came on but no other problems evident and as i was coming off the Mway i didn't worry too much until a mile or so after, i noticed my temp gauge shot up to the red but thinking it was linked to the warning light for battery i decided to pull over and investigate.I rang a pal to come out for advice and help before i attempted to drive further. The time the overheating warning came on till i turned the engine off was in tbe best of my memory approx about 10 mins max it could be less.whilst i was waiting for my pal to arrive i lifted bonnet up everything seemed fine,no smoke or noises a little bit hot, then i noticed fan belt gone.My pal suggested we cool the engine down with some small amounts of water chucked on to the engine to assist it's cooling, then when temp was down drive home but stop if it's three quarters overheating again, which we did once until i got home.Next day i bought a new fan belt and at same time a new power steering belt, put both on,and i've been running the van for a day after the belt change and the van seems to be running fine and i don't notice any loss of power or performance so far,but i am worried that ten minutes of overheating may have damaged my engine in some way and i have yet to find this out.My question is how long before the overheating would cause any damage to an engine and how much tolerance do they have as a guide?

How longs a piece of string? It's one of those questions I'm afraid. I personally wouldn't drive it anywhere with no water pump running.

well Mr Puk it certainly wasn't intentional on my part, but it happened while i was driving it,just wondering if i have damaged
anything seriously as i have no idea how long a peice of string is?All i can go off at the moment is driving daily till i notice anything in performace or loss of power.Has this happened to anyone else and what were your experiences when it happened?

Can't really give you an answer to that.

ok thanks,it's probably me being a diesel noobie,i was trying to get a general idea of a diesel engine's limits under stress,
i will just have to keep my eye on it's performance and look out for any abnormal signs which develop,

Was it obviously boiling up when you stopped? Sounds like you might have been lucky, they run quite cool as engines go.

As above though, only time will tell.

do you mean the water in the expansion tank?I have seen this in petrol cars but i don't recall any bubbling, hissing or
any other heating signs, was wondering if the temp needle is just the earliest warning sign and perhaps there was an x amount of time from this showing max,is the temp warning preset to occur before damage can happen?

It'll actually boil in the head first, but it'll be pretty obvious as it'll be forcing steam/coolant out the header/pressure cap.

Im assuming by the fact it has two belts its a 2.5 york engine?

In the past we've had numerous 'numpties' actually cause them to stop due to overheating, and still not suffer any after effects - pretty bullet proof engine in that respect.

Im sure you are fretting over nothing ...
