Holes in the floor!?

Postby TheJed » Mon Mar 02, 2009 9:25 pm

Just removed some rear passenger seats from my van and am now left with 12 holes in the floor. The van has a ply floor with that heavy duty lino down which is sealed all around so ideally I don't want to lift this. How would I go about filling these holes up without any welding (and preferably without lifting the ply)? Is it enough to just put the bolts back in? Are they a big problem? Any help would be gratefully recieved as I am about to start working on converting it to a weekend camper and don't want to build on top of it and then have to dismantle it all in the future to repair what I didn't do in the first place. Cheers :D

If the hole go through the ply and the floor pan just put the bolts back :)

If the holes dont go through the floor just plug the hole with a bit of wood

Yeah they go right through so I'll just stick the bolts back through and put a load of grease around them underneath I guess. Cheers :D :D

Good idea 8) had a look in the holy grail (that is the screwfix catalogue) and they do some stainless 'marine' grade bolts so I'll pick some of them up tomorrow! Only thing is I wanna get as flat a head as possible for in the load area so I don't keep stubbin my toes on them! Cheers for the help! :D

Use countersunk head machine screws (or bolts) stainless if you wish. Countersink the plywood. Flush fit :D :D .

I have similar sounding holes in my van from where seats used to be.

There is a layer of that heavy duty lino you mentioned, then instead of ply, I have thick carpet (nice to sleep on+keeps some heat in, so its like someones front room floor)

what I've done is coat the holes with that anti rust stuff (for piece of mind), then filled it with a bit of expanding foam to keep the water out and make a seal, then covered it with few circle layers of carpet the same diameter as the top bit of the hole (so its level with the lino and a little soft), then put down the remaining top layer carpet.

Seems to work. I used carpet in the the top of the holes simply for 'lying down' reasons. There was nothing worse than rolling over and feeling your shoulder fall into a little gap!

dunno if thats any good to you, but thats what I did....
