intelligent charging system 350lwb transit

Hi can anybody offer technical advice on an alternater problem i have with my X reg (2000) 90PS 350 LWB new shaped transit. The battery light is staying on and i have been told it is the intelligent charging system. Apparently this can only be cured by a Ford Main Agent is that so?

I've checked the Ford maunal and it dosen't say anything intelligent charging, basically it says if the battery light is on it's a case of checking the voltage from the alternator and if that's okay you should check the earth and if that's okay you need a new alternator.

Thanx MrMpuk for the advice,i'm a little lost when it comes to technical stuff (but i can sure make a good job of cleaning my van !!!), so have decided to leave it in the hands of our local main dealer as i need the van for a 950 mile round trip to Scotland on Friday, so no room for error on my part if you know what i mean but thanks for your help anyway, it is much appreciated.
